Russia has formally expressed support for India’s candidature for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), emphasizing that any reform of the body must not expand Western representation.

Addressing the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, “Our principled approach is clear — UN Security Council reform cannot involve additional seats for Western countries, especially Germany and Japan, who are now on the path to militarism and revanchism.”

Lavrov stated that Moscow favors broader representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, adding, “We support Brazil’s and India’s candidatures for permanent seats, while ensuring the interests of the African continent are also met.”

He highlighted that Russia continues to work with allies and strategic partners through BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Eurasian Economic Union, promoting a unifying global agenda focused on cooperation and information security.

Lavrov concluded by stressing that the United Nations should remain the central platform for discussions on international information security, rather than smaller, exclusive forums.
