India‑US partnership deepens across defence, technology and healthcare: Ambassador Sergio Gor
The United States and India are strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors — from defence and technology to healthcare — creating new opportunities for investment and innovation, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Monday.
Speaking at a programme in Kolkata marking 250 years of America’s Independence, Gor highlighted the expanding partnership between the two nations, citing joint military exercises, defence collaborations, and growing business ties.
“India and the US share a remarkable relationship. Pick any sector — we’re working together in it,” he said.
Gor pointed to the recent Exercise Tarang Shakti held at Jodhpur Air Force Station, which involved over 500 troops from both countries, as a symbol of deepening defence cooperation.
On technology and investment, he noted that American and Indian companies are investing heavily in each other’s markets, with several US firms establishing large production facilities in India.
“Incredible progress is happening in IT development in both directions,” Gor said, adding that the collaboration represents “an incredible opportunity.”
He also praised India’s role in the global healthcare supply chain, particularly in providing generic medicines to the US. “We import a significant share of our generic pharmaceuticals from India — because we trust India,” he said.
Gor revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump had spoken last week, hinting at further developments in bilateral ties.
The event also recalled Kolkata’s historic connection with the US, noting that Benjamin Joy was appointed as America’s first consul to the city in 1792. West Bengal Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta and Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal attended the programme.
