INS Sudarshini docks at Alexandria during Lokayan 26 voyage
The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini reached the historic port city of Alexandria, Egypt, on September 23 as part of its ongoing Lokayan 26 transoceanic expedition. This marks the vessel’s second visit to Alexandria during the deployment.
The 10‑month journey began from Kochi on January 20, 2026, covering nearly 22,000 nautical miles across 18 ports in 13 countries. Along the way, the three‑masted barque has sailed through the Arabian Sea, Red Sea, and Mediterranean, transited the Suez Canal, and participated in the Escale à Sète maritime festival in France.
The ship completed its first Atlantic crossing in May, arriving in Antigua after a 19‑day voyage from Cape Verde, surpassing the milestone of 10,000 nautical miles since departure. Subsequent stops included the Azores and Lisbon, marking its 15th port visit in August.
Throughout the expedition, naval trainees have gained hands‑on experience in long‑range navigation, sail handling, and traditional seamanship. The Mediterranean leg has further enhanced their skills in open‑sea manoeuvring.
On arrival in Alexandria, INS Sudarshini was welcomed by Rear Admiral Mohamed Abdel Aziz, Commander of the Alexandria Naval Base, along with officials from the Embassy of India. The port call includes courtesy visits, cross‑deck exchanges, and professional interactions with the Egyptian Navy, strengthening maritime cooperation between India and Egypt.
Lokayan 26 underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to professional training, maritime outreach, and fostering international partnerships. Serving as a floating ambassador of India’s maritime heritage, INS Sudarshini carries the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and the vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) across the seas.
